Drones – soaring to great heights?

In Australia and New Zealand, similar to the rest of the world, drones have seen strong demand from consumers, and are creating opportunities through disruption in many large and mature industries.

DJI remains the undisputed leader of the consumer drone market, and is continuing to consolidate its position against old competitors and new entrants. GoPro’s recent entry into the market is too late and will have minimal impact on DJI’s dominance.
In comparison, the commercial drone market has no incumbents. The market is new, fragmented and highly competitive with new players entering the market every day across manufacturing, software and services segments.
The Australian commercial market will reach >A$400M at full penetration. The market is relatively nascent as commercial drone players are defining new and disruptive use cases across multiple industries. Most of the opportunity will arise from drone related services.
ANZ regulation is changing to stimulate growth and certainty. The Australian regulator, CASA, intends to stimulate more commercial growth, while the New Zealand regulator, CAA, is aiming to create more structure and protect privacy of citizens.
