Video Entertainment Market Outlook

The Revolution Continues

Executive Summary

  • The Australian Video Entertainment market has now shrunk by over $600m (11% nominal) from its peak in 2009
  • The OTT revolution continues to reshape the Video Entertainment marketplace
  • Streamed digital media (SVOD, TVOD and EST) are growing strongly at the expense of traditional media (Satellite and HFC delivered Premium Pay-TV and Physical media in the form of Blu-ray and DVDs)
  • However, greater levels of competition mean that revenues from digital media are not fully replacing existing revenues
  • Consumer spending on video peaked at $5.8bn in 2009
  • Through to the end of June, the market will have fallen to a forecast $5.2bn (2016) and we expect it to shrink further to $4.8bn by 2020
