BRIEF: Regional TV’s crisis: a new approach needed

Abstract: Network Ten broadcasting shut down in Mildura this week, highlighting the increasingly precarious position of regional TV broadcasting in Australia. This is the result of structural trends in the video entertainment and advertising markets that cannot be reversed. At the same time, key media policy objectives are at stake, especially access to local news & current affairs broadcasting. This demands a rethink of regional broadcasting policy, and the need for more Government support for regional broadcasting to protect these policy objectives.
