INDUSTRY BRIEF: News media bargaining debate set to reignite in 2024

TLDR version: Australian publishers’ agreements with social media giants for the re-use of publisher content (principally news) will start coming up for renewal in 2024. Facebook in particular has expressed a desire to move away from news content and has hinted that it may not renew its agreements. In contrast to this, Nine Network recently claimed that re-use of video news content on social media is actually rising. These differing views of the trend for news content re-use could easily lead to a re-run of the conflict that led to the Government’s News Bargaining Code. If the Government cannot manage this, then the rest of its platform regulation agenda may be still-born.
