Virtual worlds become a reality
Tomorrow’s virtual worlds are emerging today.  Today we see two primary streams of activity – digital manipulation of our surroundings in augmented reality (AR), and entirely immersive worlds in virtual reality (VR)
A handful of large US companies are defining our virtual future. Google and Facebook have invested heavily in the space, with some products in market today. What will our future look like if it’s defined by advertising behemoths?
The future looks bright for virtual platforms. Building on today’s technology, we expect to see targeted experiences, distributed computing driving down hardware costs, and a convergence of current standards
The industry must overcome significant obstacles to reach mass-market success. Progress is required both in the development of the underlying technology, and consumer adoption as they integrate it into their everyday lives.
The VR/ AR opportunity is significant, but it will be 5-10 years in the making. Sustained development investment over time is required to unlock the opportunity in this space. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for the ‘killer app’ that will result in a step-change
