REPORT: What’s the likelihood of telecoms price inflation?

Contents

Over the last decade, the price index for telecoms has fallen relative to general inflation. But the September 2023 quarter CPI data saw the telecoms index rise faster than the overall consumer price index for the first time since 2013, albeit on a quarterly basis rather than full year. Inflation linked pricing by retailers and nbn may fuel a further cycle of telecoms inflation in the coming year. Higher telecoms prices can assist in improving industry returns but will become harder to justify to the public should telecoms close the gap on overall inflation.

The big picture: Consumers have benefited from price and quality changes

Telecoms prices outpaced the CPI in the September 2023 quarter, but not YoY

The next year could be very different to the last decade
