Survey results will be published shortly –  Click to participate in survey <!– –> VHA-TPG vs ACCC court proceedings On Tuesday 10 Sept, VHA and TPG’s challenge to overcome the ACCC’s merger decision began in the Federal Court in Melbourne and is planned to run for the next 3 weeks.  Both VHA and TPG began their cases by painting a picture of a challenging mobile market which had deteriorated in recent months, with TPG highlighting that its original mobile business case had also deteriorated into an unworkable state – mainly due to the government’s Huawei ban. Their argument is that to become stronger through a merger, they would be a stronger competitor against Telstra and Optus. The ACCC began by noting that VHA/TPG want the Court to believe that by letting them become more like Telstra and Optus (ie: bigger) they would become more competitive versus the competition from separate players and a 4th mobile operator… This case will be a battle of the ‘expert witnesses’ and who can convince Justice Middleton as to which future scenario is more likely. Awareness is growing rapidly, and the medium has hit the mainstream. Over 80% of Australians are aware of podcasts, versus 70% of Americans. Monetisation is not effective for podcasts with small but highly engaged audiences. The economics remain challenging for smaller audiences, presenting opportunities for platforms that can effectively generate value from niche groups of dedicated listeners. Australian consumers will be able to subscribe to Apple TV+ for as little as A$7.99 a month and with family sharing enabled up to 6 other devices can simultaneously use the platform. With Apple TV+ and the soon to launch, Disney+, the streaming video market is getting increasingly crowded, leaving consumers with more choice than they can manage.
